About

Hi there. I’m Rich. I love talking about mysteries, but there’s such a taboo about spoilers that it’s hard to get up a good conversation about mystery technique. This site is a place to talk about mysteries without having to mince words or tiptoe around plot twists.

I’m a freelance developmental editor and mystery fan. I mostly work with self-published authors of genre fiction, helping them to polish and improve their drafts ready for publication. I particularly specialise in mystery or mystery-related techniques: clueing, foreshadowing, managing audience suspicions and constructing twists and surprises.

My main editing website should be online in February. In the meantime, if you’ve written a mystery you’d like to me to take a look at, or just want to talk about mysteries in general, drop me an email at thewanderingeditor [at] gmail [dot] com.

  1. I was absolutely awestruck by your takedown of 4:50 from Paddington. It made me realize I have been sleepwalking through life, wasting time moaning about failed relationships when clearly I should have been flexing my brains (if any). All my depression has been lifted. You are a Christmas miracle.

  2. Hello.
I just discovered your crafted excerpts here, while looking up information about Death In Paradise Series 3 Episode 1. I am Nate, from the US, and find your style direct and prose to be quite poetic, but it’s the solutions you offer than had me sit back in my chair and indulge. I am a story teller by nature and have started my writing training in the last two years to develop technique. I hope to mystify some pages one day, and look forward to learning more from your content and community. I rarely interact on the internet with others yet I found your professionalism and storyline dissection with solution based responses to be most deserving of an online applause. *clap clap*
